Bird Mask Tutorial

This is my second kids’ mask tutorial.  As with the Lion Mask, I shall be teaching kids how to make this mask at this year’s Guernsey Liberation Day celebrations.

You will need:

  • Scissors
  • Glue stick
  • Sellotape
  • Pre-cut eye mask with elastic, or download a template (this pdf also includes a handy feather and beak template and should ideally be printed on card, but paper would be ok)
  • 2 pieces of A4 craft paper in different colours
  • 1 small piece of orange or yellow craft paper for the beak
  • Lollypop stick
  • A few craft feathers (optional)

This is what I did…

If you are using a pre-cut mask then simply tie the elastic to it (through each hole). If not, download the template and print it on card if possible.  Cut the eye mask out and tie the elastic to it.  Children will need help cutting the mask out.

Cut out the feather and beak template.  Draw around the beak template on the orange paper and cut out.

Fold your 2 pieces of coloured paper in half, then in half again, then again.  It should be the right size for you to draw 2 feathers shapes (using the template) on one side.   Cut both shapes out (this should give you lots of paper feathers).

Fold the beak down the centre, and then fold the top two corners in so they are in line with the centre fold. Glue one flap on top of the other to form a 3D beak. Put the beak to one side to dry.

Now it is time to glue the feathers to the mask. You can use the lollypop stick to curl some of the feathers if you like.

Glue the paper feathers to the mask in any way you like.

Once most of the feathers are on, you can carefully glue on the beak.

Try and cover the mask with paper feathers – you make need to cut some smaller feathers (I just cut the big ones into quarters).

Finally, sellotape a few craft feathers to the wrong side of the mask if you want to.
